Answers to Your Most Common Questions

Q: What is the NOIM form, and how do I lodge it?

The Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form is a legal requirement that must be lodged at least one month before your wedding. Maria can guide you through the process.

Q. Do I need to be an Australian citizen to get married?

No, you don’t. Non-residents can legally marry in Australia.

Q: Can we get married on a public holiday?

Yes, we offer public holiday ceremonies for an additional fee of $150.

Q. We just want to elope (simple ceremony) with the 2 witnesses, is this possible?

Yes, every couple is unique, and we offer intimate elopements at our office.  It can be just you both with the presence of two witnesses.

Q. How long do we have to wait to be officially married?

The lead time will be approximately 1.5 to 2.5 months. This includes you giving 1 month notice to the Celebrant (when completing the NOIM form) plus 2-8 weeks for the marriage to be registered with NSW Registry and issuing of the official marriage certificate.  This is the current lead time as per NSW Registry.

Q. I don’t want to be legally married, is it ok to just have a marriage ceremony and not registered?

Yes you can. This is refer to as a Commitment Ceremony, very similar to a marriage ceremony accept there is no the legal paperwork involves or required wordings during ceremony is used.

Q. Can we arrange for an online marriage ceremony & registration?

No, the marriage ceremony must be done in person in the presence of the Celebrant, the groom, the bride and their 2 witnesses. Please note that on the NSW Registry of BDM website, there is an option to 'apply' for a marriage certificate online. This means you are applying for a hard copy of the marriage certificate you had lost/misplaced for a marriage that was already registered.

Q. I didn't know about giving 1 month notice to the Celebrant before a marriage can occur, what should I do?

If you cannot provide 1 month notice before marriage date, you will require a Shortening of Time approval from the Prescribed Authorities. We can help you understand and apply for the process. Q. Is there a priority urgent fee to be married faster?

No there is not. You are required to provide 1 month notice. If you are not able to give 1 month notice, you must apply for an exemption known as Shortening of Time. There is no urgent fee apply.

Q.  Where can I obtain more information with regards to getting married in Australia?

Q. My Lawyer/Migration Agent requires a letter from the Celebrant to support my Prospective Marriage Visa, can you provide this letter?

If you are sponsoring your partner who is currently residing outside Australia, and requires a letter from the Celebrant to support your Prospective Marriage Visa application to the Immigration Department, we can provide this letter to you upon completion of the Notice of Intended Marriage Form.
